MOUNDS-- A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. for the new Mounds Elementary School that will replace the one destroyed by an electrical fire in October 2007.
With 33,000 square feet, the new facility will include 12 classrooms, three specialized classrooms, an administrative area, a media center, gymnasium, computer lab and a storm shelter. and will serve Mounds’ approximately 350 elementary students.
“From our standpoint I think the biggest thing is we are getting to start it,” Gary Lundy, superintendent, said. “This process couldn’t get started quick enough, it’s a great relief to be at this point.”
The new school will have a drop-off lane and a covered waiting area. Lundy said they will have to reconfigure traffic patterns for patrons, students, buses and all other traffic at the school during construction.
“I believe everyone will adjust to that for the fact the building is going up,” Lundy said. “I think it will be great when the equipment is here and we watch the building being built from the ground, up.”
Students will be present at Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony.
The exterior finish will be brick and synthetic stucco with a metal roof. Crafton Tull Sparks, Tulsa, will provide architectural, engineering, and interior design services.
