Union 8th Grade Center - Tulsa, OK
Union Public Schools’ 8th Grade Center faced two challenges - a growing student body and a building that was designed when conventional wisdom said to use minimum windows. The interior was drab with dark tile on the floor and unappealing walls. Students, administration and parents felt the school was unfriendly and cramped, with 800-900 students attending classes. Some even referred to it as a “prison.” Crafton Tull Sparks took on the two-phased project with the goal of restoring character and excitement to the school. The project included refinishing or creating a total of 30 classrooms, along with designing a new media center and administrative offices. All of these new spaces boast modern, energetic finishes. The facility can now accommodate more than 1,000 students in a beautiful, comfortable learning environment.
